Skater Michelle Kwan withdraws from Olympics
Posted by Gerri on Sunday, 12 February 2006, at 8:34 a.m.
Champion figure skater, Michelle Kwan, suffered a new groin injury (strain of adductor muscle of the right hip) in practice Saturday morning (about 11:20 AM, LMT, Torino (Turin), Italy, forcing her to withdraw from the Olympics. She had just recently recovered from an initial groin injury sustained late summer/early fall 2005.It was to be her third attempt at Olympic Gold.
An article on the U.S. Figure Skating website states her pain increased throughout Saturday, and she was seen by the Olympic physician at 2:15 AM, LMT, Sunday morning. She withdrew shortly afterwards. Emily Hughes, her re-placement, was telephoned by the skating committee at 2:45 AM, LMT, Sunday morning. She will fly to Torino this week.
Michelle Kwan was born on July 7, 1980, PDT, in Torrance, CA, (33N50, 118W19).
This is so sad. Olympic Gold is the only skating award that has eluded her and one she wanted very much to win. Michelle has won the most championships of any female skater in the world: her first was as a Junior skater in 1992 and her most recent two were in 2005. All of her awards and an extensive bio are listed at the following U.S. Figure Skating website.
http://www.usfigureskating.org/AthleteBio.asp?id=2267 I sure would appreciate her birth-time if anyone has it!
Thanks,
