梵谷是一位用盡生命創作的畫家，畢生追求真愛及真實的感受，沒有世俗的狡情做作與世儈。70年代初期，美國民歌手Don McLean被梵谷的畫感動不已，於是寫下這首Starry starry night獻給文生．梵谷；歌曲中對於星夜等幾幅畫做了文字的描述，同時也感嘆梵谷的藝術不為當時社會所賞識，以及其 梵谷窮苦潦倒、英年早逝的一生。

Just visited the exhibition of Van Gogh and Gauguin in Chicago.


Try to draw some interesting facts from Van Gogh's Chronology.
Certainly, we can learn some thing from this great artist.

He was indeed not an ordinary man with so many career change.
He did have guts to pursue his own interest and not affected by other's comment.
I do not have any comment on his love with widowed cousin " Kee" and Sien, an alcoholic prostitute.



1853 born as the first son of Theodorus Vincent, a Dutch pastor

1857 Birth of Vincent's brother Theodorus (Theo)

1861-1864 attend school and learn French, English, and German. Does his first drawings

1869 apprenticed to a branch of Paris art dealers Goupil & Cie, which his uncle has established in the Hague

1872 begin life long correspondence with Theo

1873 transferred to the Brussels branch of Goupil&Cie's, then transferred to London branch. Make drawing on walks but throw them away.

1875 Permanently transferred to Paris branch. He neglects his work and is unpopular with colleagues and customers alike. He visits galleries and museums. Spends Christmas with his parents without permission from his employers

1876 Works as an assitant teacher at Isleworth, a working -class suburb of London

1877 January-April apprenticed at a bookshop in Dordrecht
May Persuades his father that he has a religious vocation and goes to Amsterdam to prepare theology faculty entrance exam. Studies Latin, Greek and Maths, but find those subjects difficult and abandon his studies.


1878 Return to Etten, then to Brussels with his farther to begin a three month course for lay preachers. Vincent is found unsuited to the job of lay preacher

我每次聽這首曲子..思緒都會跟著歌詞停頓在某一個時空當中,
有時覺得人是可以孤獨的,只是要能享受自己的孤獨並不是件容易的事吧!
很想拿這曲子來做網頁的背景歌曲,很可惜3M的檔案限制..只好作罷了!!

In 1997, with several my college classmates , I saw Van Gogh's starry night, your favorite one that was painted at June 1889 , at the museum of modern night in New York city. To be frankly, I was not so moved with Van Gogh's work then. That was simply because I knew very little about him. Also, I just did not like the misery refleced on his work. But I did buy Van Gogh's painting book from where the information I post above come. I did not frequently open it until recently. I used it as a medium to teach my 2 year old son to appreciate the world's beauty through artist's eyes. At the same time, I learnd Van Gogh in more depth and he become the first western artist that my son have ever known. My son likes Van Gogh's Sun Flower series. And sun flower become one of his favotire flower. He even asks me to buy sun flowers when I worship buddha. Is it really amazing ? I planted sun flowers before and I may do it again this summer.

Sorry, you are right . I saw it at Museum of Modern "Art" ( MOMA) in New York city.

在法國巴黎的奧塞美術館看到另一幅有關星夜的畫作:"隆河上的星夜"..梵谷做此作品時為這幅畫做了下列的註腳:"這阻止不了我對宗教熱切的渴望,於是,夜裡我走到室外,想畫星星.我一直夢想著一幅像這樣的畫,畫裡有朋友結伴同行"
Regarding to Starry Night over the Rhone, the following description is what I have found from my book

Here, everything lies spread beneath the sparkling tranquility of the natural lights in the heavens. Painting the stars out in the open-that was Van Gogh's achievement in the night picture. " I am tremendously gripped by the problem of painting night scenes or nighttime effects on the spot, actually at night," he wrote ( letter 537 with his brother) Taking a man of letters, a creative artist, Van Gogh had located a way of projecting his idea of stars as a utopian counterworld of the imagination where the artist might find a home. The better world which his entire creative energy sought at that time was up in the stars.

" Death may possibly not be the hardest thing in the life of a painter. I must declare that I know nothing about them, but when I look at the satrs I always start dreaming , as readily as when the black points that indicate towns and villages on a map always start me dreaming. Why, I wonder, should be the shining points of the heavens be less accessible to us than the black dots on a map of France ? Just as we take a train in order to travel to Tarascon or Rouen, we use death in order to reach a star. In one respect this thought is undoubtedly true: we can no more travel to a star while we are alive than we can take a train once we are dead. At all events, it does not strike me as impossiible that cholera, kidney stones, cancer and consumption should be means of celestial transport just as steamers and railways are earthly ones. To die peacefully of old age would be the equivalent of going on foot." This passage from letter 506 is crucial to an understanding of suicide that ended van Gogh's life but for the moment we can take it as defining two areas: a remote one ( longed for and unattainable) out in the universe; and one in this world, quite concretely located in Arles, involving all the routine drudgery of everyday life.



A drawing will not just be a drawing when we start to share the thoughts and feelings of artist who paint it. It can be a medicine that can cure our sorrow and bring us back to the life we should cherish. Do you agree ?


Do you like impressionism? I like Monet and was dreaming to visit Giverney where he created to paint the famous water lily series.
Do you like gardening or flower arrangement? Maybe someday, we can talk about it. Right now, I am counting the days to enjoy spring blossom show. I hope the bulbs I planted last fall including crocus, daffodil,hyacinth and tulip last fall won't disappoint me in this coming spring. Iris may be the next candidate for me to plant for the sake of Van Gogh. ^-^

我喜歡印象派的繪畫,不如說我喜歡梵谷,莫內..的某些作品,事實上我比較衷情於文藝復興時代的繪畫三巨匠,達.芬奇,拉裴爾和米開朗基羅...尤其是米開朗基羅.
莫內的作品..我最喜歡他"海之頌"的一系列畫作,也許和我喜歡海有關吧^^

Hi, Jasmine:
Leonardo Davincci was really a genius. I was amazed by his talents both in science and art. His art achievement left us the famous paintings such as Monalisa's smile and last supper. They did not surprise me too much. But I can not believe that he was also a pioneer attempting to take human beings to the air. The competition between him and Michaelangelo was also fun to see.

I tried to sign on the guest book in your beloved web site. But I just could not do it for unknow reasons. The speed of connection was kind of slow. However, I really like the changed background music. My family had a good time this afternoon with that nice melody you provide. My son even danced with it !!.

1878 Return to Etten, then to Brussels with his farther to begin a three month course for lay preachers. Vincent is found unsuited to the job of lay preacher. Hoping to satisfy his sense of religious calling, Vincent goes to the Borinage, a coal-mining district in Belgium, near the French border. Where he lives in proverty.


1879 January-July. Assigned to Wasmes in the Borinage for six months as a lay preacher. Appalled at the frightful conditions the miners live in. His social commitment irritates his superiors, and they allow his commission to lapse on the grounds that he has no rhetotical talent.

August: Journeys to Brussels on foot, to ask the advice of Pastor Pieteresn and show him his sketches of miners. Returns to Cuesmes in the mining district, and continues doing the same work unpaid, till July 1880. Though he is living in proverty himself, he does all he can do to help the needy. It is a critical period for Vincent, one that is to leave its mark on his subsequent life.


1880 July: Vincent writes to Theo, who is now working at the Paris office of Goupil and gives him financial support. Vincent describes his own agonizing uncertainty.

August- September: Devotes his time to draw scenes of life in a mining community. Theo encourages him. Copies wroks by Millet.

October: Vincent goes to Brussels and studies anatomical and perspective drawing at the Academyh. Admires the work of Miller and Daumier. Stays in Brussels until April 1881.

Note: So far, we should be able to know Van Gogh's personality well.
His brother's support that leads to his future success is also a great thing to learn.

Though we might not be the material to be artists, we can support and encourage some talented people to become artists. The same principle can apply to many fields.

Van Gogh was born on March 30, 1853. I should try to analyze his 8 words. That may be fun.


His love storyies will start in 1881.

1881

Spring: Vincent goes to Etten to see Theo, and they discuss his future as an artist. He stays in Etten, drawing landscapes.

Summer: Vincent falls in love with his recently widowed cousin ' Kee' Vos-Stricher, who is staying in Eten with her son. She returns to Amsterdam earlier than planned.

Autumn: Vincent goes to Amsterdam to propose to kee, but she does not even allow him to call. Vincent holds a hand in a candleflame to prove to her parents how serious he is.

November-December. First oil and watercolor still lifes. Relations with his parents are strained because he is still obsessed with Kee and his religious views are extreme. At Christmas he has a violent quarrel with his father. He even rejects his father's gift of money and leave Etten.

1882

January:
Vincent moves to The Hague, living near Mauve, who give him painting tuition and lends him money. Theo continues to send 100-200 guldens per month. Vincent's relations with Mauve cool off, partly because he refuses to work from plaster models. He meets Clasina Maria Hoornik ( Known as Sien), an alcoholic prostitute, who is pregnant. He looks after her, and she occasionally sits for him.

March:
Though his admiration is undiminished, vincent severs his links with Mauve. He does a good deal of drawing from Nature. Apart from Sien, most of his models come from poor districts.

June:
Hospital, to be cured of gonorrhoea. His father visits him . Vincent wants to marry Sien, though his family and friends advise against it. He takes her to Leiden to give birth, and looks for a flat for a family of four.

Summer:
Discovers the attraction of oils and begins to examine the problems of color. Theo pays for his painting materials. Their father accepts a living at Nuenen and moves there with his family.

Autumn:


For the rest of the year ( and througfh to summer 1883) Vincent stays in The Hague, drawing and painting landscapes from Nature. During the winter he does sketches and portraits of ordinary people.

1883

September- November.
Conversations and his correspondence with Theo lead Vincent to the painful decision to leave Sien, with whom he has been together for over a year. Lonely once more, he goes to Drente in northern Holland. He takes a barge to Nieeuw Amsterdam and goes on long walks. The dark peaty landscape makes a strong impression on him. Vincent draws and paints the local peasants hards at work.

December:
Moves to Nuenen, where his parents are now living, and stays till November 1885. During these two years he does almost two hundred painting using dark, earthy colors. His parents try to help by overlooking his negligent dress style and unusual behaviour. He sets up a studio in a vicarage outbuilding.


1884

January

Vincent's mother breaks a leg and is confined to bed for a lenthy period. Vincent gives her loving care.

May

Vincent rents studio rooms in the Catholic sexton's house.

August

Brief relationship with Margot Begemann, a neighbour, but both sets of parents are strongly opposed. Margot attempts suicide.

August-September

Vincent designs six decorative pictures for the dining room of Charles Hermans, an Eindhoven goldsmith.


October-November

Vincent gives tuition to amateur painters from Eindhoven. They take long walks and go to museums together.


December

Hitherto, landscapes and pictures of peasants and weavers at work have predominated in Vincent's work. Now he tries his hand at portraits from models


1885

Vincent's father dies of a stroke on March 26. Vincent is deeply affected. Following a quarrel his sister Anna, he moves into his studio in the sexton's house.
