Hexagram 42 Increase
Expression Yì indicates that (in the state which it denotes) there will be advantage in every movement which shall be undertaken, that it will be advantageous (even) to cross the great stream.
Judgement Increase. It furthers one To undertake something. It furthers one to cross the great water.
Image Wind and thunder. Image of Increase. Thus the superior man: If he sees good, he imitates it; If he has faults, he rids himself of them.

  Expression: He brings increase to no one. Indeed, someone even strikes him. He does not keep his heart constantly steady. Misfortune.
Image: 'To his increase none will contribute:'--this expresses but half the result. 'Many will seek to assail him:'--they will come from beyond (his immediate circle) to do so.

  Expression: If in truth you have a kind heart, ask not. Supreme good fortune. Truly, kindness will be recognized as your virtue.
Image: '(The ruler) with sincere heart seeks to benefit (all below):'--there need be no question (about the result). '(All below) with sincere heart acknowledge (his goodness):'--he gets what he desires on a great scale.

      Expression: If you walk in the middle and report to the prince, he will follow. It furthers one to be used in the removal of the capital.
Image: 'His advice to his prince is followed:'--his (only) object in it being the increase (of the general good).

      Expression: One is enriched through unfortunate events. No blame, if you are sincere and walk in the middle, and report with a seal to the prince.
Image: 'Increase is given by means of what is evil and difficult:'--as he has in himself (the qualities called forth).

      Expression: Someone does indeed increase him; Ten pairs of tortoises cannot oppose it. Constant perseverance brings good fortune. The king presents him before God. Good fortune.
Image: 'Parties add to his stores:'--they come from beyond (his immediate circle) to do so.

  Expression: It furthers one to accomplish great deeds. Supreme good fortune. No blame.
Image: 'If the movement be greatly fortunate, no blame will be imputed to him:'--though it is not for one in so low a position to have to do with great affairs.
